hey guys, so recently a friend of mine invited to go to a pond on his grandfathers property because he said there were big bass in there. I didnt believe him until i got there and saw 10 in bass swimming 3 ft from shore. i ended up catch about 6 three pound fish, all on shore. My question is do you guys think there could be something bigger in the pond? maybe 6 lbs? is that possible or does the size of the pond limit their size?

Long ago my pops held 3rd in the state record for crappie. About 22'' and some where around 3.7lbs. And it was caught out of a farm pond that was maybe 25-30' across and circle shape. i never would have thought it was in there, but it was.

Generally (at least from what I've read) bass will get bigger in deeper holes than in shallower, larger surface areas...

For the person thats now going to bring up some reservoir in Texas thats 2' deep and holds record bass, I said "generally," "from what I've read," and that does not take into account longer growing seasons in warmer climate, catch and release only regulations in alot of the FL/TX bass spots (leading to longer lives and in turn, bigger bass). :)

It can, however, if no one thins out the bass or forage fish once in a while they tend to stunt at a certain size. You would have to really fish the pond hard a few times to see.

yeah there could be some large ones in there my friends one acre pond has about 3 5 pounders and a big catfish.

Yes, there could be and probably are. Even small pond if properly managed can have big bass. In short if you want big bass impose a slot limit, say 12-15in and keep all that size, that allows the allows bigger bass to have less competition for forage and ensure a younger generation for future numbers. Obviously the pond must have plenty of forage as well so make sure there is a health pop. of small to medium bluegill and other fish big bass like to eat. If you are in SoCal or along the coast you have a long growing season so that helps produce big bass too.
