I have a couple of old tanks that have no center brace but thicker glass. I want to get glass cut to make a nicer cover for them. One is a 55 gallon and the other is a 75. Would I be able to put the glass across the whole tank with nothing to support it in the middle? Do I need to build a brace in the middle of the tank to support the glass tops?

my 90G has no center brace and has glass across the top. 2 pieces 4'x9" joined with a plastic hinge that's about 40". I can give you the thickness in the morning.

Yeah you could have a glass hood with a bracing. I remember back when I used to live in florida with my dad he had a 30 long like that and it had a regular glass hood like a aqueon and the glass was maybe 2mm thick. You might have to have something alittle thicker so it dont flex to much and snap .

That would be awesome! Thank you :)

Ya I was thinking it would be necessary for me to use thicker glass.

ok, it's a bit narrower than I thought, only 7" wide and 1/8" thick. it's the original top so it's been fine for 25 years. I have no idea if it's tempered or not. the hinge is only 25" long.

I think i would silicone in a center brace out of glass then make 2 tops. If you make one glass top that large i see it being pretty heavy. Another thought is they also make plastic one piece tops i have one on a 55, sure plastic dont looks as good but it worked.

You'll be fine with that length and width without a center brace. Just bump up to 3/16" glass. I run 3/16" tempered over a 2'x4' area on my large aquarium on one large hinge. (2 pieces at 10"x48" and 14"x48").

Just incase you don't find the 3/16" hinges anywhere else, Dr. Fosters Smith has them.

I currently have plastic ones and I can't stand them! They are bowing and they just don't look as good as the ones that have a brace. I have glass on my other tanks and like the way it looks better.
