Hi everyone.

Currently I have a 7 inch female festae. She lives alone. She is a great fish and definitely has a territorial type behavior.

Here is my question.

I found a amph Amarillo free. It's around 6 inch and looks to be in good shape. Just about a year old. I always wanted one of these fish and they are hard to come by. I don't have the means of setting up his own tank but my festae tank is definitely big enough for them. I just don't know how she will react.

Do you think there is any chance my festae could tolerate living with this other cichlid? Or am I just dreaming?

Thanks for the honesty

Yes, it is possible that she would accept the amph.

It's risky though. Both are very aggressive fish. I would be as concerned for her as I would the amph.

It might be best to take a cautious approach and have a divider on hand to separate them. I would put in a whole lot of hiding places and cover.

It will be risky like stated and it is only 2 aggressive Cichlids which means somebody's going to be the boss. It depends on the aquarium size for territorial rights personally wouldn't try it.

The female Festae has already claimed the aquarium so you will probably have to move things around.

I would say go for it, but be prepared to immediately intervene if there is aggression from either side. FWIW I find amphs to be generally be more aggressive than festae, but would not be surprised to find a festae that bucked that trend and turned out to be the aggressor.

Hopefully they get along. They have only each other to focus on, so if they don't then they're likely to spend all of their time fighting. Switching up decor before introducing the amph may help with territorial behavior from the festae.

ETA: I wonder if there are dither fish that would work with them?

We will need pics!
