Is there actually a "red severum"? I saw it at the lfs and it was a light yellow with reddish streaks...looked albino. I heard they get huge. Do you guys think they would need to be sold in pairs or would just one in a tank be ok?

There are numerous types of severum... the gold one can almost look red, then there is the "Red head' which is also known as "Rockteil". Severums don't always mate up well and can be troublesome to breed, so I would almost recommend having just one in a tank.

There are several species of severum, and most golds color up with red. Species Rottkiel is also a really nice fish, but rarer so price is up there. There is the green, turquoise, and another that puts all of them to shame, but I can't remember the name.............oh yeah, guyana, which is yellow green, but remarkable. As far as size, they can attain 10" Or basically the size of a dinner plate. Depending on tank size is how many you should have. Under 100 gal, only one is recommended.

One per hundred gallons? That's pretty severe, don't you think? As far as I know, these various gold, green, color morphs are just that -- not separate species. Some, like the gold, are achieved by selective breeding. Others come from specific areas, and are just local color variants. These can also be used for selective breeding projects. I've found them to be wonderful fish to keep. Can be a bit ditsy, but also are likely to be the "cops" of the tank. Nice fish, whichever color you choose!

No, not one per hundred gallon, if under 100 gal only one is recommended. If over you can have more. This is just info to make them thrive, and get best color. If you have less then 100 gallons, they tend to be more territorial. I have seen 3 in a 55, and let's just say they weren't happy. I have 3 in a 120, and they are doing very well.
