So I bought my 29g biocube used and the lady I bought it from was running a fluval 305 on it. Anyway, I have been way busy lately and haven't had the time to come on here and ask some questions. This has been like three weeks now and the tank is running just fine. Nitrates, nitrites, ammonia is all perfect. This is with the 305. I am thinking about creating a sump out of a 10g that I have lying around. Should I just not mess with it since the 305 is doing fine or should I make a sump? Im just thinking of the saying "dont fix it if it aint broke"... ya I know a sump is better but is it going to screw with my system? I have a F. percula, royal gramma, watchman goby, zenia, torch anemone, candycane and some shrooms. They are all thriving and growing. I just want the best for THIS tank. If its going to be fine with the 305 and regular maintenance of said filter, I am ok with that. I would like a sump thought as I know that it is better for the tank. Inputs?

any DIY ideas for the sump also would be good, i can get some mangroves and all that.

Cant hurt to add a sump and good skimmer but I would keep everything that you have and add a refugium sump and skimmer if you can. Don't get rid of the canister especially if all is going well. Having good mechanical filtration and a place to put carbon or other additives goes a long way.

The issue with them isnt that they dont work, its just that they trap detritus in an area where we arent very likely to get to it very often.

As long as your h2o quality is good, it would suggest to me that it isnt trapping very much detritus. So I will assume that your tank is just minimally stocked at this point.

But, you do have several fish...careful feedings though, and general small size of fish is probably what has led to this success.

No reason to fix what isnt broke, if you start having persistent issues with nitrogenous wastes though, you might want to consider either cleaning it more frequently or pulling it.

exactly. Canisters are fine, just keep up the maintenance and be careful about what you use for media. Keep up the good work. did that anemone finish splitting?

Thx for the input guys!!! I just posted to the anemone thread but unfortunately it didnt :( Im thinking my overactive clown was the issue. If it starts to do it again, I think I'm going to pull the clown and let the anemone do its thing. I would love to be able to say that I had an anemone split!
