So, I have an idea for led moonlights using blue led license plate 'bulbs' (see pic) but my brain has just stopped working. I need ideas/suggestions for some sort of holder - needs to be something cheap, need to be able to cut to various lengths to accomodate different numbers of bulbs, needs to sit on a flat surface without rolling around and would preferably look 'clean and tidy' (no cut up tin cans please).
The bulbs worked out at $1.40 each (including shipping) so if I can get the holder sorted without spending too much it should make for a very affordable set of moonlights.

You can buy a very good expandable moon light set from Tru-Lumen for about 40 bucks for two sets of (3) lights and a transformer. You can get a splitter (mine was free) and add 7 more sets if you have a 12 foot tank!

Yeah, but I'm thinking along the lines of 1/4 the price using these license plate bulbs, and I like building stuff myself every now and then, keeps the brain working (sometimes).

Yeah, but most pics I've seen of those being used, the results are not that good.
Exactly

If you want cheap then think PVC Pipe, solder and iron, and a twelve volt power source. But I would recommend lots of silicone just in case any water would try to get on the contacts. Silicone is great for many applications. And if you want to get a little more fancy paint the PVC piping with chrome or a reflective paint and just adhere some suction cups to the pipe and place them on the back of your tank. I'd put a bar high pointed down and in towards the front bottom of the tank. Hope this helps or gives you more ideas.

Cheap you say?

Scrap lumber from home depot @ 51 cents each. Hot glue gun. Power source stripped from an old cordless phone, router, other random device. And some heat shrink to tidy it up a bit.

Actually, what I would do is go by your local autoparts store. Ask for a 'Dome Light' for any late 90s or up GM or Ford vehicle. The typr bulb you show in that picture looks as though it would fit that type socket.
