I have a 55 gallon tank and I would like some suggestions for fish that will not outgrow the tank. I don't want a community tank, just 1 or 2 cichlids that will do well in the tank. I had a tiger oscar in a different tank when I was younger and he was awesome. I know that a 55 is too small for an oscar so I won't be getting one, I would like something like it though. Thanks

Some cool fish to have solo (or a pair) in a 55:
Hericthys Deppi
Salvini
Nicaraguense
P. Panamensis
any cryptoheros/amatitlania species (sajica, HRP, etc)
Centrarchus

You could put some fast-moving dithers in there with them as well, giant danios do well as do Buenos aires tetras. I'd do around 7.

I agree with the others. A salvini pair with some dithers would be my choice. They get really colorful and aggressive.
A group of 4 of thorichthys and some swordtails is always nice too.

A small group of thorichthys or a pair of cryptoheros with some wild swordtails gets my vote.
