My males are not showing color yet how do I tell the females to put in with my adult male? We are new to these fish but we have one carrying eggs for a week now and I put her in her own tank. Please help.
Almost all the peacock females are a variant of brown. Usually you can see bars up and down on the females much more pronounced. A couple other tricks is to look for color in the fins. The fin color will usually idicate a male, but if you have a very good female she will show color too.
Not sure if this is true but I just read an article that the males that color later are more colorful then the ones that color early. My opinion is still out on this one.
Another idication is females seem to grow faster then males until 1 1/2 to 2 inches. There is no fool proof guarentee to pick males from females in juvies, Best way is to wait til about 2 to 3 inches. Once you have had a few batches of fry you can find differences to pick out what is what.
yes again i agree with alton almost impossible to tell on most of these africans especially as juvies, unless there is a distinct color difference, some times only when studying the fry keepers can one decide who is male and whos female, unless they have an orange belly etc
How many do you have ? I bought a group of 5 unsexed and I thought I had too many males so I bought a larger one that had been in a tank and never showed color thinking it was a female .Once I added it ,it colored up and ended up being a male and they started breeding .Each time I found a female holding they got separated .I ended up with only 2 males 4 females.I even notice some blue specks on the face of fish that ended up being females. Another options is to vent them basically turning them over and look at their privates. If your females are big enough that they have probably spawned before its alot easier but when looking at the private parts you will see two small openings near the anal fin .On a male the two holes will be the same size (oo) on a female the "vent hole" where the eggs come out will be bigger and will look like (oO)
I know about venting but I keep forgetting to buy a magnifying glass. I think we have 9 left we have been selling them. I do have the female holding in her own tank. I just don't want my adult male to kill the juvies. I want to sell them when they color.
