I have kept aquariums all my life, but I am finally getting a big one... looking at an 8 foot 240. I have a pair of MEAN severums (my hand goes in the tank, I bleed), a 8-10 inch female jag, and a large pleco I am going to put in it. What would be a neat not so common fish or 2 to go with them? I am thinking maybe a festae?

Are you sure they are Severums? I've kept them off an on over the years and have never had 1 bite me. I guess it is possible. Well Severums are South American and Jags are Central so you want a good mixed tank then? Why not try a Herichthys Pearsi? I'm not sure how the Female Jag will do with this mix though. Have you had the Jag and Severums together? I've never kept a Jag but have always been under the impression that they can be quite aggressive. Thats a huge tank so you have alot of choices.

Yeah, you can get whatever you want in the 8-14 inch range except maybe trimacs or red devils, but if your severums are as aggressive as you say they are you might want to look into a dovii (jk, thats retarded, don't get a dovii), but maybe you could keep a midas with them if they are that mean.

I would say go to Rapps website www.tangledupincichlids.com

and place an order for whatever your heart desires. That is a large tank with large possibilities, look at his pics and see if anything strikes you as "I MUST HAVE THAT!!!"

Thanks for the advice! Ya, driftwood, they are severums. I have had many a severum and never had a mean one, but they had laid eggs one day and I didn't see them and was cleaning the tank and got nailed by the male (gold). Now anytime anything goes in the tank it gets bitten. He has taught the female (green) to bite too. Kinda strange. The jag is very very docile, I am not too worried about her being too aggressive. That and I don't *think* females get huge.

female about a foot, male about a foot and a half (possibly more especially in the wild)

its arguable but this is probably average in aquaria

My severums would attack me, one of them would literally leap from the water to attack me. It got that bad (esp when they had eggs/fry) I had to feed them with a net in one hand to keep him at bay.

I like eWok's suggestion. Argentea and Bleekeri are both bad to the bone!!

VIEJA!!! Most any of them are very colorful, semi aggro to aggro. And in my opinion they enhance any aquarium.
Zonatus, Argentea, Regani or Synspilum are just a few of the very attractive Viejas.
