drain the tank down an inch obove his head get the biggest net that will fit do it in the dark if you can less stress , just curious why the total tank clean just want to make sure your reason is correct.........

the gravel is host to benificial bacteria this isnt a recommened practice instead use a gravel vac and clean well if your tank is really filthy do a few 10 percent water changes in a week much better on the tank and fish

They sell nets in the petstore big enough to easily catch a 6" oscar.
Never rinse out the gravel that would destroy the bacteria and cause an ammonia spike.Gravel vac and weekly water changes is what you need to be doing
Your having water quality problems cause that tank is too small for an oscar,75 gal minimum is what you need

You need to do 3 things,
1. Perform weekly water changes at about 10 to 20 % with the aid of a gravel vac.
2. Use an algy mit to clean the interior of the tank.Glass, heater, filter tubes etc.My Oscar nuzzles on my arm as I do this !
3. You need to get a bigger tank pretty soon around 75 gallon should be o.k.
A friend for your Oscar my be an idea too, once you get the bigger tank.

If you don't get him a bigger tank he will grow slower and crooked. You'll see what I mean if you don't.

get a mag float for your algae, its magnetic with a scrubber for the inside of the tank. DON"T RINSE YOUR GRAVEL. If you do you will be in the same spot you were in now in about a month. Feed it less and do more water changes. Get a python that hooks to your sink. I can do all my water changes in about 30 mins. More filtration. More filtration. Hang a biowheel on the back.
