I have a question when moving a ray from one tank to the other what would be the best method? I dont want to use nets bc the stinger will get caught up in it and i dont want to take it out with the risk of being stung is there a more safe and easy way to do this? thanks.

Funny. I was gonna post on this 'cos I just moved 3 on Wednesday.

I just cut a couple holes in the side of a 5 gal bucket, a few inches from the bottom. Emptied most of the water from the tank, laid the bucket on its side right in front of the ray and herded the ray in with an old plastic algae scraper. When you lift the bucket the extra water drains out of the hole and voila one stress-free ray that hasn't left the water for a second.

To be honest, the algae scraper was practically redundant - the rays are so bloody nosey they were halfway in before they even thought about complaining.

I never thought of using a bucket for larger rays. Good idea! I have been using a 1 gallon ice cream pail to capture any newborn rays instead of netting them. It certainly is less stressful.

You're the pro, I'm a newb around here :D What *do* you do?

lol

ive yet to master the technique on how to move large rays. ive used a very large rubber net a few times, and large rubbermade containers with holes drilled in them. there is no easy way at all...

last time i moved my 24" female i said to myself "ill never do that again"

smaller rays are a breeze. also w smaller rays i use a net that is the same size they r. get them in the net face first, and they cant turn around to get their stinger caught

the rubber net Trev talked about i think is called a landing net. this is the best imo

very good ideas here folks but for what i am going to do i actually think using a laundry basket may be best. Lean it on one of its sides and get the ray to move into the basket then just carry it to its next destination.
