I live on a community lakefront, stocked with peacock bass and a few other species. Once I built an 800 gal pond & just ran an extension from my sprinkler system to provide water. The sprinkler draws water from the lake. Problem was the water was pretty cloudy. I want to do the same again, but close to 2500 gal above ground pond to raise flowerhorns. I'm thinking of running incoming water through a pre-filter and then to a sand filter. This will be done like 15 min a day, then stop. Water will recirculate in the pond with a pond filter. I live in South Florida so water temp won't be a problem, besides I plan to ad a solar heater for the "cold" months. Additional water will be daily. What do you guys think? any other ideas? Thanks. Dan :screwy:

As long as the water pick-up is in deep enough water your good to go (providing neighbors don't fertilize to heavy or spray poisons that run off their lawns and back into your p/u). The county sprays the canal (lg ditch) behind me twice a year and kills off everything in the water.

Keep us posted w/pix,

I would be very surprised if this were not the case
People put so much crap on their lawn weed and feed is probably the worst :(
but if the pbass don’t mind give it a try

The best way to get clearwater is to attach a small float to your p/u
then tie a weight to it with 1-2 feet of slack so it will be suspended off the bottom

hummm, maybe that's the problem. The pick-up is about 15-20 feet from the shoreline & about 8 feet deep, but it seems to be lying there in the ground...no wonder so much pollution. It's been there for 20 years. I might have to snorkel & dive for it...maybe put a couple of cement blocks under the pipe....

the crazy things we do for fish...:WHOA:

Have someone topside watching for gators, anacondas and the occasional snapping turtle  :nilly:  .

Have you had any success catching pbass down there?

Dr Joe

Studies have statistically shown that 400 people disappear every year in Florida due to Anacondas, and another 4 dozen to killer snapping turtles. The study was conducted just now by me and I didn't research anything, but that's what I am going with.

Ummmm....that would be 402 people if you count the ones that were pushed.

I bet ewurm got a gov'ment grant to do that study too! :nilly:

I's not fair to label all snapping turtles as killers just because a couple eat a few dozen people. Now people are going to start calling them pit turtles!

Besides they just tourists anyway. (:OMG: :j/k: )

Hey ewurm...want to come down and fish for pbass...I know this lake...:D

Name withheld because 'they' are watching...

LOL, yeah fishing is great. I've caught my share, but usually just set them free. Once I had like 6 smaller size in an outside tank ,,,,but didn't look too happy, so I released them. In my lake somebody released 3 tarpoons, I estimate the size around 5 feet or better. Always a pleasure to see them breaching water in the mornings...I think water will be good.

By the way, my son when he was young, started playing with a snapping turtle. It literally snap his nose and wouldn't let go. Thanks God I remember how to make their mouth open....put a lighter on their tail and they will open their mouth.... just a couple of stitches, but the nurses couldn't stop laughing when I told them the story.. :D

How big is this lake?
I think putting a lighter on any of our tails would make our mouths open :jaw: .

Did he leard his lesson?
