After going away on holiday for 3 days i came back last night and found red streaks on my alb sen bichir on its head and sides along with a swollen belly. the swollen belly has been there for a while before i went for holidays but i dont know what caused it. it still ate this morning but other than that it lies still with slow breathing and its fins cupped over its belly.

I need advise on the illness and type of medication to use please. i've not moved him to a quarentine tank yet for fear that i'll stress him too much

Many thanks guys

bacterial infection - septicemia treat with antibiotics asap. i usually use tetracycline and kanamycin, but if you can't get those, you can try brand name meds like Maracyn and Maracyn-Two.

It looks like something did not pass through its belly, do you have gravels in your tank? I could not see it clearly from the pic. Don't give anymore food till its recover. I would move him into a quarantine tank, raise the temperature, and not so much on the water level, making it easier for the bichirs to go up for air, and use salt.

definitely bacterial infection

Yes im using black gravel, i also think that this fella swallowed some gravel which might be the cause of the swelling..not really sure D:
just did a water change this morning, lowered the waterlevel and added some salt. i just bought this AZOO bacteria treater product and i hope it works. my other bichirs seem to be getting restless and im not sure if the bacteria is the cause of it :/

all my albino sens died with that thing also. IMO they are susceptible to that disease.

i sure hope it isnt contagious and fatal D:

It is contagious, to other fish who's health has been compromised.

The biggest cause is dirty water. Did you feed a lot more than usual before you left on your trip?

Did any of your filters stop working?

It is very fatal, if left untreated too long. Your best shot is to water change the tank, and dose the antibacterial meds in the tank.

You can even try Jungle Labs brand 'Parasite Guard' or 'Parasite Clear'.

Use full dose.

Oh no..:( I did a 50% waterchange before i left for the trip and they were fed hikari carnivore pellets 2x a day for the 3 days. everything was fine for the 2 days until the 3rd day however, received a call from my sis that the fish had those markings. Filters are still working fine. Im not sure whether its too late to treat him.. the markings seem to be getting worse. i did a waterchange yesterday and added AZOO antibacterial med.. gonna give the 2nd dosage in the afternoon again. it ain't a good feeling to see your fish suffer :(
