OK guys HELP.

I have tried to talk to the wife and all I get out of her is get whatever will make you happy. What woudl make me happy is some input but I guess that is why I joined here.

Background. I currently have a 55 gal and looking to upgrade for my oscars (still juvies and only 2-3 inches long so turn off yer flame throwers...lol) Tank is standard size so 48x13x20.

I am looking at a tank of around 120-125 gal as honestly the 150 is just a bit taller and I dont see too much benefit compared to a 125 unless you can convince me otherwise I guess. This is going on my first floor so I would not want to go any larger with my older subfloors.

Anywho... I am really torn between going with a footprint of a 120 being 48x24x24 or a 125 being 72x18x22. Which would you go for and why? I know this is solely an opinion but your input is greatly welcome. I find myself leaning towards the 125 since it would allow me more viewing range from the front and a bit more range for aquascaping to set up a few zones for my oscars, lil green terror, catfish, and perhaps a firemouth one day.

Now lets say we decide on a tank. Are there any drawbacks to using a hang on the back overflow should I wish to go sump eventually? Right now I am going to continue with my XP4 and will re-add my penguin HOB filter with the larger tank for a bit more filtration. I find that I like the abilities in a sump to add a LOT of biological filtration BUT I do tend to not like the overflows eating up space in the tank. Sure it makes it look super clean but I want that real estate for my fish unless there is something I am not seeing here.

So please give me your insights MFK as to tank footprints and your opions on the pros and cons of a hang on tank overflow to work in conjunction with a XP4.

well your gnna b keeping oscars if you stick to that then the 72 by 18 should be alrite reason i say this is because most likely the oscars wont top the 14 mark yes there have been some but then you never know generally people say wider is better but with your stock i think longer would benefit your fish with spreading them out because with a 48 if you have 3 that leave only about 4 inches for personal fish space

as for the filter go with canister for a tank that size i think a canister is your best bet unless you get 2 hobs with really high gph rates or you can do a good canister with a hob to really have sparkling clean water
