I am an avid animal rescue person. I love animals. So when my friend said she was adopting another cat, I was happy for her. For the last few weeks she's gotten the house ready, got an extra litter box, all the usual stuff. She had been in contact with the owner who was paying for the spay, and shots, for a few weeks.

So she gets the cat of Friday night. It's infested with fleas. I try to walk her thru what he needs to do. (bathe it, and the others she has since it made contact with them, and then vacuum, and get drops for everyone, etc). "Nooooo.... I think she's fine with just the drops..." Fine whatever. So the original owner gave her money to have her spayed. Good! She took it Saturday morning to get spayed and vaccinated for rabies.

Then i got to work this morning and she said she gave it away. I asked why and she said her husband wouldn't help her. I said, "well he doesn't help with the two you had, what made you think this one would be different?" She said, "yea i know.... but also our cats don't like her". So I asked her if she took it back to where she came from, and she said, "No, we took her to the pound. I don't want her going back to where she came from. They had fleas."

I felt like saying "you dumb ***. They gave her a better home than she will have at the pound where she can now be exposed to other cats with a URI (upper respiratory infection) among the obvious being put down part. " But I couldn't. She said she didn't want to talk about it any more, and that she felt bad enough about it.

Fast forward a few hours. NOW....

She just told me she had her husband go to the pound and say she got lost, and picked her back up. Now, these are my friends mind you, but COME ON!!! That poor cat has been drug from her home, to a new home with other cats, that "don't like her", then to the pound with a bunch of other howling and hissing cats, then back to their house. Geez. That poor cat. For owners who claims to be so knowledgeable about cats, they aren't. Cats will not just warm up to a new cat in THEIR house. It takes time. It took mine old man a month to get used to the new cat.

Ugh. sorry just needed to vent. Thanks guys..

Wow. Sadness. I don't think your friend has the capacity for abstract thought.

Some people are so whissy washy about everything in life.. i quess they never heard of the word comittment... when you do this you should at least give it every chance to work.. i hope she realizes how pathetic she is acting.

wow what the heck? thats messed up.

wow , poor cat. I won a bunch of the drops at a dog / cat seminar I went to but I cant use them because my only cat is a hairless sphynx :) Let me know if I can help out. They can have them if she cant afford it...

I'm appalled when I read the craigslist free adds everyday and how many people are giving away family members of a couple years simply because the new place doesn't allow pets. I've actually stopped perusing the free adds just for that reason...

I fully agree you you guys. I sat shaking as she IM'ed me about all of this. Maybe I feel to much for them... I don't think there is a thing as caring too much about an animal though, unless you start caring more about your own feelings over the well being of the animal. IE: animal has no quality of life, yet you want to keep prolonging treatment so you're not sad. That's not right. But this?? ugh. Ignorance.

I guess I just try to be a voice for these creatures when I can. They can't defend themselves against the actions of people. I can't save them all I understand, but each one matters in its own way, and is worth the little effort it really takes. I vow this: if I ever win the lotto, I will open up a rescue for dogs, cats, and fish. Sigh.... Oh to imagine.

Anyhow, I was inspired a long time ago by this: (hope you enjoy it like i did)
Starfish

Traditional story

On the beaches of Mexico,
Starfish are washed up,
And left on the sand by the tide.
When the tide goes away and
The sun keeps on burning,
The starfish are left there to die.

On a beach there in Mexico,
A young girl is walking,
She's usually walking alone.
She bends down and picks up
A starfish she sees there,
And in to the sea it is thrown.

On a beach there in Mexico,
A young girl is walking,
One day she's not walking alone.
There's an old man who sees her
Throwing the starfish,
And there's something that he wants to know.

He says "hey, little girl don't you know,
There are hundreds of beaches in all Mexico,
And thousands of starfish
Washed up on each one,
Nothing at all can be done.
Nothing at all can be done."

The young girl continues to pick up the starfish,
And throw them into the waves.
The old man says "silly girl,
You're making no difference,
There are too many starfish to save."

The young girl just looks the old man in the eye,
Then she stares past the waves to the sun.
As she throws another starfish
Back into the sea,
"She says a difference was made to that one."

On a beach there in Mexico,
An old man is walking,
He's walking one day through the sand.
He bends done and picks up
A starfish he sees there,
And says to that thing in his hand:

"Hey starfish please don't be afraid,
I'm going to throw you back into the waves,
For a girl found me here
Just like you by the sea,
And she made a difference to me,
Yes she made a difference to me."

this is so beautiful... and yes you make a difference to me... you make me proud to know you .. and i am comforted in the help you give these poor helpless animals.. i hope your big heart is rewarded some how, some way... and i pray that your reward is near so you can continue your quest to aid the homeless ... this task is hard but even saving one at a time is the difference..

CL can be a good outlet. when it first started out it was, but it seems to have developed a lack of good intentions. Most people are BYBs on there, some are just idiots who buy a dog/cat/insert animal here while they are cute, then oops, it grew up, I don't want it. Or they are moving and don't want to pay the deposit, or have a "vicious" breed that aren't allowed in MOST apartments.

I had to go through roughly 15 different places before I found a complex that would accept our German Shepherd. But there's no way in hell I would give her up because I'm too lazy to make the phone call, or drive over for a doggy interview. I love our complex here. We have a fenced dog park, bathing station, and fountain at their disposal.

It can be used for good though, I have to admit. I responded to a lady's ad asking for help on Friday. She found two orphan kittens, maybe a week old, with no mama (she waited all day for her), and they were dehydrated. I ran up and took them home and they are doing great. (but that's a separate thread with lots of cute pics :D )

This is an emotional subject, and one that gets me wound up. We have three dogs now, two of which were physical abuse rescues. Yes, they have the ability to honk me off, but no way could I ever subject them to what they went through.
We won't be getting any more, but I won't be getting rid of them if there's anything within my power I can do to prevent it. I took them on, and it's until death do we part.
I'm even that way with my fish, get the correct tank first, then get the fish. Although I'm not above putting a fish in a tank slightly too small then when it grows saying to the wife, "See? He needs a bigger tank..." Gets me bigger tanks.:naughty:
