Needing something small, hardy & peaceful

I have a little 10 gallon tank I use or rosey red quarantine tank. In looking or something I can keep in there to keep the cycle alive when I run out. It needs to be hardy obviously cause chance of disease from the reds. Any suggestions or just keep it stocked with minnows

What about African dwarf frogs? I'm thinking if you stay away from fish you reduce risk of transferring disease.
