So i told my brother he could get a that he could pick out a fish. I told him nothing small that will be eaten, not a stupid happy fish, nothing ugly,
it had to be semi aggressive so it wouldn't be bullied. that was a big mistake. he came home with a needle fish!!

....he said it's semi agressive,
it won't get eaten, not a happy fish and i have proof, not ugly. i had to ask for the proof. it bit the woman whe she got it out of the tank and drew blood!!

It's only about 6" right now it's diet consist of feeders and frozen food.
I think they get kinda big will they be ok with my O's and JD in the big tank?
any other info would be greatly appreciated!!

Needlefish with O's and JD? NO.

exactly how big do they get?

I've seen them close to a foot, they may get a little bigger.

they get around 12 inches I believe. Be careful though, your 0's and JD will probably kill it from the bottom. It really just hangs close to the top of the tanks. They aren't fighters and aggressive cichlids like JD's can really put a bad beating on them.

I would recommend putting alot of floating plants up there for the needle for cover. They are pretty skittish and have been known to swim really fast when scared straight into the side of your tank damaging their long skinny snout.

So he'd be fine in the 200gal(7'x2'x2'). i had noticed he likes the top so bought some fake plants for now to float at the top for him just in case.
My O's and JD are really calm the most aggressive O is only that way when it's feeding time. the most he'll do is push you out of the way to get food.
Are they active fun to watch fish? What the best food? Hand Feed?

lol...i really doubt i bit the lady and if i did bite her...she didnt bleed. they arent vey aggressive at all. until feeding time. if yours is eating frozen food that is awsome. mine wouldnt touch it. he would only eat live food. thats why igot rid of him. i think they are very pretty, but also very skittish so you need to be calm around the tank. no fast movements or they may spook and hit the glass or hood. the floating plans would be a great idea. mine loved to hide under them. goodluck w/ it.

also be ver careful w/ the O's and JD. they could destroy the needlefish in a second. the needlefish grows pretty slowly and they will outgrow him in a hurry.
hope this helps.

from what i was told it bit down on her pinky and she pulled it off and as she did the teeth worked like a saw and gave her a small gash
someone else had to finish puttuin the fish in the bag.

I have never kept needlefish but about two weeks ago the LFS got in three really nice specimens with undamaged noses. I was setting up a tank for some baby Datnoids and thought they might be a good companion fish (although I was worried they might try to eat the Dats, even though they were likely to large to swallow). Anyway, I went home and got a piece of freeze dried krill in a ziploc and took it back to LFS to see if they would eat it. Unfortunately, the clerk and then the manager would not let me offer them the krill, which was dumb because I was going to buy all three of them and one tiny piece of krill would hardly foul their tank.

They are interesting fish though and the marine ones in S. Florida are really pretty, a greenish blue color.
