Mine eats minnows out of my fingers. Just hold them by the tail over the water until he sees it, then drop it in

I did not know this Gar forum had a mod.. or every really has had one specific to it. Historically we have had many a discussion regarding this separation of Needlefish and tetras from Lepisosteids and nothing ever changes nor do I expect it ever will. So why beat a dead horse even more? Fact is though nothing about Belonids can be related to Lepisosteids and vis versa. Really does no justice for these fish to be lumped like this as they both deserve a more specialized attention. It is only a rare case such as in myself that I have focused a good deal of attention to both. Most do not and those qualified to talk about Lepisosteids are often poorly experienced in Belonids. You really can not interchange the husbandry of one to the other. They are totally different animals that are hard to relate to one another in Captive care. It is in my opinion better to treat these fish separate but others think form equals similarity and so choose to not separate on the basis of behavior and husbandry. They instead lump on Common name or superficial outward appearance. Whatever... That horse has been beaten to a pulp and then some.

Now back to Belonid care and training...

To train a Belonid to Pellets or prepared foods is somewhat different than the techniques used with Lepisosteids. For one it is much harder to accomplish. A Belonid does not equate smell with food as the Gars will. They are more a sight feeder and are moved into action by movement. It is however possible to use a technique called drop training which is useful with such fish. Basically you drop feed items in one at a time and train the fish to recognize this as feeding time. First start with live feed as the will quickly take this as time goes on slowly start changing the feed to different items. This is time consuming and takes a very long time but in the end you should be able to train the fish to surface feed on pellets, fillets or cut shrimp. It still however will not change the fact that the fish feeds from sight so you will need to always use a drop or agitation method to feed them. Groups of these fish do better than singular specimens when trying this. Often on fish works off of the other in taking or giving cues.

definitely agree with the comments and great info as well.

i think we should pin this for two reasons:

1 - because this question comes up every 5th post and no one will search for the information because no one uses the search.

2 - no one reads the pinned topics, so it would be an entertaining further exercise in the ignorance of many posters about the pinned topics.

in other news, please tell me how to ID my Florida gar :) --

thanks for the stereotypical comment. i understand people do tend to get too worked up about the 'false gar' issue here...i just don't bother to post in those threads any more and would advise others who it bothers to do the same.
and regarding your comments, how about you keep your stereotypes to yourself and we'll do the same about "powerlifters".--

I've shattered powerlifting records in my weightclass in Maryland, as well as competed in Wrestling and NEVER gave using ANY type of performance enhancer including steroids or growth hormones so much as a passing thought.

You ALL are wussies with a capital "P" that could not fight your way out of a wet paper bag if your lives depended on it. There is one and only one reason for wussies like yourself using performance enhancing drugs in athletic endevours; You know 100% that you are NOT a real man and CAN NOT compete with a TRUE man and athlete like myself and other true MALE ATHLETES. Now go on and play needlebutt with your wussy boyfriends. I hope that your cranium grown to the size of a small planetoid like old honest Barry Bonds!:banher:
