Needle nosegar

Could somone please educate me on the care of needle nose gars i want to buy one for my 80 gallon but firstwould like to know everything about them thanks for the help

There's only so much we can tell you. It would also help to do a little research of your own. There not difficult to take care of. They mainly stay at the top of the water, i fed mine red rosy minnows because he didnt wanna convert to anything else. They max out around 12". Be careful of your tank mates cause my catfish took mine out like it was nothing. There technically not a true gar. They need warmer water so 76F-82F is a good temp he can thrive in. Ive always thought a good way of learning about a fish is keeping that fish. But thats me. Good luck and i hope to see some pics of that needle nose soon!

I owned one a long time ago and all it would eat was rosy minnows. They are extremely difficult to convert to anything else but I assume its possible.

First, what type of fish are you talking about?
There are two (if not more) species commonly called needle nose gars at many fish stores.
1. Lepisosteus osseus- TRUE needle nose gar (More commonly called Longnose Gar)
Grow to around 3 feet in aquariums and need over 300 gallons.
Native to North America
Ganoid scales (armor)
Dorsal and anal fins DO NOT line up.
Nostrils at end of mouth.

2. Xentodon cancila- Freshwater Needlefish (MISTAKENLY called Needlenose Gar)
Grow 10-12 inches long and are a freshwater species related to the marine needlefish.
Dorsal and anal fin line up symmetrically.
Tiny scales/ May appear scaleless

if its a true longnose gar an 80 would be too small mininum would be a 360 for long term
