I'm not sure on this one; I have never kept true needle nose gar before.
can they eat pellets?
Once again, I have never kept them before, so I couldn't tell you what they eat other than they're predatory fish.
are they really gar?
No, they are not true gar. True gar are in the Lepisosteidae family while the false gars are in the families Belonidae and Characidae depending on if they're true needlefish/needle nose gar (Belonidae) or just mislabeled pike characins (Characidae). If this is the fish (needle nose gar) that you have, then it's not a true gar.
thanks

the freshwater needle fish, Xenentodon cancila, is in the family Belonidae (as stated in earlier posts) and also often confused with true gars (Lepisosteidae).
i would suggest running a search on those family/genus/species names and ID your fish and go from there in search of further info--
