I'm not sure on this one; I have never kept true needle nose gar before.

Once again, I have never kept them before, so I couldn't tell you what they eat other than they're predatory fish.

are they really gar?
No, they are not true gar. True gar are in the Lepisosteidae family while the false gars are in the families Belonidae and Characidae depending on if they're true needlefish/needle nose gar (Belonidae) or just mislabeled pike characins (Characidae). If this is the fish (needle nose gar) that you have, then it's not a true gar.

pike-characins are in the family Ctenoluciidae (Characiformes), and are often referred to as rocket gars, slant-nose gars, needle-gars, south american gars, marble gars.

the freshwater needle fish, Xenentodon cancila, is in the family Belonidae (as stated in earlier posts) and also often confused with true gars (Lepisosteidae).

i would suggest running a search on those family/genus/species names and ID your fish and go from there in search of further info--

my experaince.. they eat anything small enough to fit in there mouth if it's Belonidae. wouldn't keep 'em with anything aggressive.. my florida gar beat the snot out of one, and cichlids are aggressive. and they are a pita to get offa live food ime.

Mabye the firemouth and convict if the Gar characin is larger and the tank is 2ft high or taller 5ft long or longer - the others get to massive and at the very least will eat all the false gars food if not stress the fish to death.

They might eat floating pellets - odds are against you tho.

True Gars are not Charciformes like Gar Characins they are Lepisosteiformes, a completely different order.
