Hey, newbie here.

Not really a minster fish keeper so to speak but I have been scowering these forums in awe and noticed there is an awful lot of experience with self made tanks here.

It's only a small tank im looking to build by the standards on these board (72" x 24" x 24" max). Now I have a friend who will be helping me (or really doing most of it) and has a lot of experience with watersealing, but apart from that we're kind of stumped.

At the moment this is only an idea and if it proves too expensive or overly overly complicated we will buy a standard tank but we're trying to be as conservative with money as we can.

Really I'm looking for great guides on how to build tanks around this size, what kind of thickness of glass would need to be used, and also I'm really looking a good place to BUY the glass. I live in the UK (northern ireland) so places near there would be perfect, again to save money with delivery.

Thank you in advance.

The size you are talking about is still within the realms of a standard tank. So with that being said Are you set on building your own or can you buy new a 72x24x24 is 180 gal U.S. A pretty standard size over hear at least.

Sorry if that doesn't help.

No no i realise that it is a pretty standard tank, the thing is I'm just trying to be as economical as possible so if building a tank could save me money rather than buying a readymade tank, I'd be interested in going that route.

it kinda depends on where u live, here i can pick up a 72x18x24 tank used for 200 bucks, which is still cheaper then it would be to build one, yet more expensive then some other places around

There is a glass guide in the sticky at the top of this section. There are plenty of examples of plywood tank builds on here if you want to diy it. As stated above your not in the realms of anything that can't be found to buy new or second hand or you could go all glass/arcylic depending on your skill levels/experience.

Here's a plywood tank example, obviously much bigger but the theory is the same:

Good luck and keep us posted

I agree, Plywood for the non show sides & bottom. That can sure bring cost down. There is plenty of research material to read still.
