9 years later I woke up this morning to dead tank.

Tank size is 125. API XL canister
Magnum HOT Canister
Cichlid Sand substrate

Stock list was
7 large frontosa's
5 large leulepi
5 large peacocks
4 large haps
All grew up together
all dead and it happened over night.

I have never had this happen before and I think it was due to some bad Omega One frozen cichlid formula.

Now its time to start over. I know what stock I will put in but I am not sure what steps to take to ensure the tank is cleaned and set up correctly.

I have a 3d background on the tank currently but I have noticed that I am getting waste and other things stuck behind the background and its settling in the rocks. I plan to remove it for the new setup but not sure if I should paint the back of the tank or go with something different. I like the idea of a blue or black background but I am not so sure on making it a permanent solution such as paint. Anyone know something that will last, not bubble and hold over time but could be removed if needed?

Filters, I plan to replace these with either Ehinem Pro or Fulvalve X6. Thoughts on canisters and finally best way to mature the tank as I feel I will need to change out my substrate I don't want to because it does still look good but the fish I plan to stock with are going to be f1 from daves and that is something I don't want to spend the $ on and then lose because the substrate is contaminated in what ever it was that took out my current setup. I think it was bad food but I could be completely wrong and something got in the water. I did a through water test and noticed the nitrates no2 and 3 were high but that could be due to dead fish.

I feel pretty sick writing all this and just looking for someone who has maybe been here before and can help with taking the proper steps to ensure the start up of the new tank is correct.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have a200x60x60 with 30 youngish haps , i have a stick on black vinyl background which bought of the internet, i also looked on internet for instructions, it looked easy believe me it was not. if you know someone who has fitted one before get them to help it will save you a lot of stress

I went with a black stick on vinyl background, looks easier than it is to put on, if you know someone who has put one on before all the better, sorry to hear about your loss, must be devastating.

There was a single fish alive and it was the clown loach. I don't think loaches have scales so if that was the case I think he would of been the first to go.

Sorry for your loss. Black latex paint comes off glass easily. Almost all my tanks have in-tank backgrounds, but I have the filter intakes behind so no debris. I paint the bottoms of my fry tanks.

I like the Rena Filstar XP filters, I have 6 of them. If you keep the established media, no cycling. If you have to cycle, then I'd do fishless with ammonia and allow six weeks.

Why not wash/keep the media/substrate and refill. You could try a couple inexpensive fish. You would only lose a week and may be able to avoid cycling from scratch.

Sorry for your loss.
I paint the background of all my tanks. It looks great, IMO.
Just make sure to do several coats and put a light behind it to make sure the bright light won't shine through, since this is a show tank.
If it was me, I'd take out all the substrate and wash it out in a bucket (maybe 2 inches of substrate at a time in the bucket). It will get all the old debris out of the tank, and plus the chloramine might help disinfect things.

I love Ehiem canisters, but I'm sure other brands work ok too.

I also use the vinyl on the back of my tanks. If you get it from a sign shop it's pretty cheap. Put it on like window tint with Windex and a Squeege. Make sure you have extra and you can cut the overhang with a razor blade. Really not that hard, just take your time. AND.... it peels right off when your ready for a change.
