I'm thinking about starting a species tank for neets. I plan to hold them in a 75-100 gallon aquarium. How many neets should I originally add, and would a mbuna esque tank with plenty of line breakers control for aggression If neets are too aggressive? How will multiple pairs of cutteri or sajica do as a species tank. If i do cryptoheros, I will make a heavily planted tank with plenty of hiding spots

Neets and Mbunas would be awesome! As they're both pretty heavy on the herbivorous side.

Neets are really nasty, but so are Mbuna so it should work well.

I wouldn’t recommend keeping any new/ old world cichlids together. Neetroplus Nematopus is very similar to tropheus given they like the be keep in groups, like to hug rock work and feed predominately on vegetable matter.
A word of caution, they are extremely aggression, pound for pound they are up there at the top for aggression and can be nasty. I don’t advise keeping any large fish with them, my group would swim out of the rocks and nip the fins on a large male Citrinellus then quickly dart back into the rocks before the Citrinellus could even turn around.
I haven’t kept any species of Cryptoheros before, so I cannot comment on this

That narrative I've heard for decades, myself and others I know have done it for years and for the most part works wonderfully...

Personally would go for the cryptoheros species tank. Best way to do it would be to have a single pair and 3-4 "extras", at least in a 4' 75 gallon. In a larger tank like a 125 you might be able to do more like 3 pairs and some extras. Crpytoheros are fun to keep in groups, probably my favorite family of fishes. The pair will defend against the "extras" which will keep their bond strong.

My experience with neets has been that they are super aggressive for such small fish even compared to cryptoheros. Maybe you can keep them in groups too, I haven't tried so won't speak on that one.

I'd probably just keep a colony of neets in a 100 with possibly goodeids as dithers, would that be fine? According to the Sam Bornstein's care sheet, neets will kill each other so I'm surprised that colony's have worked. Would i need to overcrowd the neets?

In that case, I may be able to get a 125, would cutteri be fine in a group or would i need another species of crypto? I'm not sure if neets or cutteri are more aggressive conspecifically.
