Woke this morning to see a sunfish labored in breathing and what looked like worms hanging out of the gills... Did my research and I believe it to be nematodes. I did also notice what looked like 'hair' protruding from its anus. Anybody have any experience with this? I QT'd him instantly but I'm afraid he may have infected some others in the tank. What treatment options do I have?

As a first coures of action treat with Praziquantel, PraziPro or API general cure. If the worms protruding from the anus are red it is most likly Camallanus in which case you would need to treat with somthing like Levamisole or Fenbendazole. Try the Prazi first it will clear up the gill flukes and some of the more common intesinal round worms. Don't panic yet. If it is Camallanus it might be easier to just get rid of the sunny.

Post some clear close ups if you can it might help with an ID.

Also can I get those at most pet stores?

Yes they are pretty easy to find. Most LFS or PetSmart will carry them. The Levamisole or Fenbendazole is found in dog dewormer and some calculations are required for doseing. I wouldn't be too concerned with that right now lets start simple. Like I said it's easier to just get rid of the sunny if that's the case.

That looks like a leech. If it is Prazi wouln't kill it. Clout or Levamisole will be effective or manual removal with tweezers. Try the Prazi if it has no effect then you'll be pretty sure it a leech

Actually after having time to really look at it. It does look like a leach. This will teach me to not answer earlier in the morning before I've had my coffee/caffeine.

Tom, what's your opinion on a bath with water higher in salt concentration? I've seen it make leaches fall of. I know bunches of pond people that have this issue use it.
