I once had a couple Brichardi, which were total killing machines so had to bring them to the lfs. Now I have a free tank, and I want a species tank for my wife...and she really loves fish that spawn, keeping the fry, etc... I know those are good parents, and wanted to buy a few to get a nice pair and end up with a species tank. Once the tank is full then they can eat their youngs it won't matter ;)

What # of fish you guys recommend I start with to get a pair going? I was thinking 5-6 fish.

Thanks!

55g...or maybe 30g, haven't made my mind yet got both free. I would prefer 30g, and from these guy's adult size (6" including finnage), 30g should be well enough.

are these the daffodils? if it were my tank id buy 4 at one source and 3 from another something like that. you get a better result with different blood lines. better fish and better colours. surely the fry are worth selling?

Daffodils are different, they're N. pulcher. The easiest way to tell the difference, is by the gill markings. They both have distinctive black markings on their gill plates/side of face, but a Brichardi's will form a sideways 'T', and a Pulcher's will look like this ))

They are a pretty nice fish, not so common that the LFS would turn them down but stil leasy to breed and very interesting. I would get some from different places and use the 55g, larger colony is a lot more interesting. As for their size...I have never seen an N. brichardi that was over 4" TL.

No not seen them bigger either. Well i'll have to order the fish at my lfs, not something they keep readily. So they will all be from same batch i guess. I think i'll start with 5, then see what happens...

Thanks for feedback people :)

I have a pair in a 29 gal and have a tune of fry right now... I would say try and find and adult pair and let them go to town or pic up (like you said 5-6 small ones and let them pair off themselves) but the cool thing about these guy is that they will never eat there babies so once they breed and have babies in the tank they wont stop breeding they will go at it again and again and again.... Its kind of a fun fish to have beacause they alway got babies.... There like convicts but better looking!!!!

Yeah, this is the reason why I am setting this tank for my wife. Plus when there are too many fry in the tank my large south american fish will be happy :)

Now I just need to find them in lfs...as they don't often keep them. And can't mail order in Canada, so it's the waiting game.

Thanks for the replys
