So how can I tell when these guys are in mating mode? They tend to do this mouth wrestling thing a lot. They like it even more with clear glass between them - I have a jar in the tank - one goes in and the other stays out. They open their mouths wide and kiss through the glass... Because these 2 are the larger ones, I thought perhaps they were both males, now I'm not so sure...

Lip locking is a competition between males to determine who is the dominate male. This is common in most african cichlids. It is not mating at all.

First they will open the mouth. Usually whoever is bigger wins, but if they are close they will fight it out to see who is the winner.
