my lfs got in some geo's but are horrible with names well i was wondering what they could be.. they are about 2-4 inchs each and they have bland colored bodies but their fins are red/blue with beautiful designs on them i was thinkin of pickin some up but i would like to know their scientific name up and look em up first so if u could give me any idea or pictures i could tell ya which one they are. thanks guys

yeah if you could get pics that would be great, but as for general info most geos get like 10-12in and need to kept on sand substrate in groups of at least 3 but preferably more therefore they need fairly big tanks (though neon blue eartheater sounds kind of like a astatheros robertsoni, are the blues spots or lines/worming? if its spotting then thats probably what it is as some call these guys eartheaters, and if it is robertsoni then only get one as they are very conspecific aggressive)

This 1st picture is a Geo. altifrons I used to have and the 2nd picture is my (what most fish shops still call a Jurapari) but it's actual name is Satanoperca leucosticta. Do either look familiar?
At ----> http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194494 <----here on MFK Jeff Rapps has made a picture thread of a bunch of Geos that might help you out. They're great fish for the most part and you really can't go wrong in getting some no matter what kind they are IMO.

ok i have some GYMNOGEOPHAGUS blue neons.. is that what you mean? they are sortof drab colored, but they also shimmer sortof rainbowish.. they stay small.

i started off with 4. im down to one now. they seem to be a more fragile species-ive been keeping fish a long time and not having much luck. i kept mine with hondoran red points..

if you can, post a pic and ill see if its the same species i have..

^^ I agree ^^

Most likely Gymnogeophagus sp. "blue neon". They are in the rhabdotus complex and will stay in the 4-5" range.

hmmmrm idk... because it doesnt have the body spangling but maybe its because they are juvies? like i said they are only about 2" maybe i should get like 3 and throw them into my 55g tank and lettem grow they are only $6 each. they kinda lookin like those sp. blue neons tho. but the body is very bland. but their finnage looks the same.
the blue and red neon is wormlike.
how do these fair as far as aggresion because i have a 2.5" crenicichla compressicep male and a pair of hrp's the male is like 3" and the female about 1.5"

They do sound like gymno's to me too. Maybe Valentine's or Blue Neons. I'm quite fond of the Gymno's these days and if you have the tank for them I would get some if i were you. Like some have said they need the cooling down period.
