I've been losing neons every night. There are no other fish in the tank. The day before one or two will start to swim in a completely eratic manner..as if they have no control overthemselves..the next day they will be dead at the bottom. Before you ask i have no test kit. I keep the water at 78 degrees and its set up with soft water. Whats killing my fish?

With no water test, it'll be hard to figure out. Is it a new tank setup? If so, was it cycled?
While you're answering bump your temp up to 82-84F where neons are more comfortable.

Is the tank cycled? How often do you do water changes? 100% soft water? Was the water 100% soft at the place you purchased them? What size Neons?

1st of all man u need a test kit , the chances of actual help are low with out one.

Ok so i bought a test kit. PH is at 7.5 Nitrites came back as 0 mg/l, and Ammonia came back to < .3 mg/l. The tank was cycled for 4 weeks. I moved recently and I reused the old gravel.

I had added 10 neons and 3 clown loaches. I kept them for 2 weeks and they were healthy and their color was improving. At the end of the two weeks with the fish doing well I added 10 more noens. The tank itself is a 55 gallon planted. The filter is a Magnum HOT.

Once the new neons were added they did well for about 5 days then I noticed them start to die off. I did a 20% water change but the die off continued.

One thing that I did try and it seems to have stopped the die off was I removed the CO2 defuser. I'm not sure if the yeast from the defuser was causing some kind of growth or bad chemical. One of the neons that I thought would probably die over night, due to his behavior, is actually showing some improvements. I don't know if that was the problem or not but the die off has stopped...just wish I knew definitively what caused it before I go to add more fish.

Thanks for your help and I know I deserve the scolding for not having a $20 test kit..problem solved.

Also, thanks Oddball temp has been bumped to 82.

CO2 diffuser??! Um...that would have been a great thing to know since neons are a riverine species requiring high DO levels.

Glad you stumbled on the solution. Hope all is well now.
