Sup MFK,

I have a bunch of fake flowing plants at the top of my 75 gallon Bichir tank, mainly for them to hide in.

I noticed recently that there was a patch of the fake plants that had this dark algae like stuff on them, but today, I found this neon green silk flowing from it!

I'm about to go clean it all off, but now I'm noticing the dark patches growing on a resin root piece at the center of the tank.

What is this stuff? Is this a serious health risk for my fish?

the algae that looks like silks is hair algae. There are several types of algae and I do not think that any of them are a problem in moderation. For algae to be a health problem it would have to cover everything in the tank and get to the point where it was depleting the oxtgen in the tank.

Originally, I was going to post a pic, but my camera wasn't charged...

Here you go

At most, it's 4" long, and even though the dark patch seems dense, it's only in this area, the rest of my tank is fine.

I want to go clean it, but I'm afraid the disturbance might throw a bunch of crap around and cause my Bichirs some serious stress. I guess that's better than letting algae get out of hand though right?
