Hello,

I am new to this section but i willing to learn.

Well, been dreaming/planning to get a neon tetra community tank started for quite some time. the time for doing it actually arrived.

After some web surfing, it appears that their care in terms of water and such is not so different from the fish i have already (so filtration, space, water param is not an issue).

They also are peaceful comm fish ^^

The question is whether they will be compatible with swordtails which grow to seemingly (5'?) sizes. So are these compatible with Neon Tetras?

Is aquascaping mandatory for successful keeping of these fish?

Thanks in advance for your input

Neons will be fine with swordtails, and as far as aquascaping i dont think the fish mind what is in their tank as long as theyve got plenty of other neons to school with.
I personally love seeing neon tetras in a planted tank.

Thanks. i was afraid that a fully grown neon can eat a smaller tetra.

Yeah,i like planted tank though i never succeed with one of those

You shouldn't have a problem. Maybe you could look into having some corydoras to get some fish on the bottom too.

thanks for the suggestion ... corydoras is not really my look. i think i will go with a fancy shmasy pleco - they grow ridiculously slow and so cute when small ^^ i think my L114 is still puny even after almost a year

Still contemplating the tank. One more question please: how long can neons live without food?

I ask in case i have to travel and be away.

Thanks

The true swordtails grow to 6-8". Too bad the ones sold nowadays are hybrids carrying platy genes so they're a measly 4" most of the time. These ones should be fine with neons though.

Neons do well without food for at least a week in my experience. You can always add cherry shrimps in there so your neons can hunt for the shrimp larva if you're taking a much longer vacation.

Thanks Lupin

i wish it were for holiday lol but one week should be OK. my father used to have 6" swordtail in his lotus 'bowl' but some one moved its location and when it rained all those cool swordtails escaped. quite a pity i really liked them

OK i will mix in red swordtails -they are gorgeous as well. now for an aquarium

i can comfortably fit in 47"x15" in my condo so about 70 galons .... so how many small fishes i can fit in? neons and swordtails only
