Stuck inside my own head
I've always liked keeping snails in my tanks to keep clean those hard to reach areas, plus they're fun to watch. I gave them up though when I started my new tank as one with mostly Mbuna and a few CL's to keep the bottom busy. Because of this the only snails I toss in are MTS on occasion to stir up the sand and provide crunchy treats for the Loaches. I've recently been reading that Nerites have a much thicker shell and can survive in an African tank, is there anyone who has had luck with this? If so, what species of Nerites would work better than others since I know the size range can vary.

I love Nerites and use them in all my tanks!

A cichlid tank is probably the more ideal tank in which nerites are utilized! I have or am keeping... Zebras, red spotted, olive, horned, snakeskin, chiton, and some other random Nerites.

I find the Olive, Zebra and red spotted fair better since they are much larger and can withstand the pecking of cichlids.

As for your sand issue... I hate MTS, I have assassin snails in my tanks and they bury themselve, not as efficient as MTS but they don't over run the tank.
