So I filled up my 10G and put lines every inch and dotted lines ever .5".

Looked at it proudly and thought now I am ready to get measurements. Graby my large fishing net dipped it in the tank to catch my O, and he flipped out ran into the intank of my 5k gph pump which made a very loud sound. That freaked him out even more and he darted into the net which again freaked him out and he jumped straight up and crashed into the top of the tank. Since he was already in the net I pulled him out placed him in the 10G to take measurements but instead I saw that he got banged up really good, judging from the location and shape I would say the pump intake likely sucked a chunk off.

It all happened very fast quicker then I relized what all was going down. So my lesson is net them on the opisite side of the tank. Any one else have experince with crazy stuff happening trying to net out a fish. On a side note i didn't relize how powerful even small fish are, I netted my JD and he tried to swim off with the net; and I tell you this I didn't expect him to be able to apply so much force to the net.

I was tryng to net out a shiner from my 170g and my wife was standing there talking to me and one of the shiners jump out and hit her in the face.

LOL... I can see that happening

In all seriousness, it is "interesting" to say the least when trying to remove anything over 3 or 4 inches from a tank 90% of the time. I learned the hard way that its best to drain at least 50% of tank water when moving big boys around. The first time I transfered my large O's from one tank to another I did it with the tank filled to the rim and ended up spending about 45 minutes cleaning up the mess they made.

My mangrove jack swam threw the net and bent the whole handle :| I have had a rd bite the net and refuse to let go reminded me a dog playing ball.

I find the best way to catch bigger fish is with ur hands if you can SAFELY some fish dont like this other do, you have to be careful and know how the fish is going to act but I find it tends to not take much slime off the fish and strangely they dont flip and kick around like with a net so there scales and eyes are safe.

Other ways are a big flexible bucket just get the fish to swim into it, a T shirt or towel.

all in all I also wouldn't take fish out just to check the size, its stressful on the fish no matter which way you go about and all you gain is knowing the size.
