I recently picked up some new substrate from a buddy, that apparently had a bunch of critters in it. My driftwood is now swarming with little white cone shaped snails.. How can i get rid of these without harming my other tank inhabitants? Thanks everyone.

OMG I got these when I put some plants in my tank once. Ummm the only way I got rid of them was when I got cichlids and they eat them, but other than that I've never been able to get rid of them, I still have them. They are quite the pest.

You can buy snail traps and they can sometimes work.

Yeah cichlids work, but i got rid of all my larger ones, and all the ones i have now would be a treat in the tank.

And I mispelled nuisance, before that one person decides to correct my grammar!

i've heard that some folks say to put a cut potato in the tank and all the snails will attach themselve to it. i tried it, snails are smarter than they look, they jump off when you move the potato.. lol.

best cure i know for snails is red jewel cichilds.. when i used to keep the fry i kept them in a snail infested 10 gallon tank. it was great, when there was lots of food because we were feeding the fry often the snails would multiply, and then the fry would get big enough to eat the snails and the tank would suddenly be clean.

By white coned snails he probably means malaysian trumpet snails
They have real hard shells...not sure if fish will be able to break them, unless you have something like clown loaches that suck them out of their shell. I bought a few hundred from another MFKer and put them all in my tank...they're not as bad as people think. Just don't overfeed, unless it's a fry tank.

You could try putting a piece of food(ex.vegetable leaf) overnight, and snails will be all over it in the morning. Pull the leaf out and do w.e you want with it lol

I will give the food thing a try, because there's 5 6" clown loaches in there and don't do anything. Thanks guys..

I believe your snails are malaysian trumpet snails also. These snails are not necessarily a bad inhabitant. The snails turn over your substrate regularly and are a good indicator of over feeding. If you have massive numbers of them, it means too much food is being left to decay. If you only see under 15 or 20, this is great! You can remove the extras at night. The snails come out at night, so you can scoop them off your substrate. Good Luck!!!

Actually decaying food isn't an issue. I had a ten gallon that I didn't feed anything cause there wasn't any fish in the tank, and there was OVER A 100 easy. It was crazy then I added 4 baby convicts and a small crayfish and their are barely any left now.
