So I learned something yesterday that I feel I should pass on to everyone out there in MFK world.

I have been trying to clean black brush algae from about 200 lbs of texas holey rock. I removed all the rock and soaked it in water with 14 liters of 10% hydrogen peroxide solution. I left it for one week and it reduced the algae significantly but rocks were far from clean.

I decided to just add a half gallon of bleach to the water. It produced a lot of bubbles which I thought was the destruction of the hydrogen peroxide. I let it sit for 48 hours and when I checked it nothing had happened. I emptied the water last night and added another half gallon of bleach and in 15 mins the rocks were white.

After I did some research I found that hydrogen peroxide will react rapidly with chlorine bleach to neutralize it giving off oxygen gas and HCl in the process.

I used this information to assure that all bleach was removed from rocks. After spraying with a hose for 30 mins and 5 rinses I could still smell bleach even after a soak in 10 times dose of dechlorinator. I filled the trash cans with water and added a half a bottle of 10% hydrogen peroxide per trash can and let stand for 10 mins. No more chlorine smell and test kit shoes zero.

Rocks are now back in tank and all fish are happy. Hope this helps those of us who use bleach to disinfect our systems and decorations to be sure all chlorine is completely removed.
