saw these two guys at a lfs, hoping someone can tell me what they are. i thought they were snakeheads at first, but after a quick google search i realized that wasn't it. they were in the back of the shop, kinda out of sight.. for whatever that's worth.

here's the pics:

Looks like it could be a juvenile crenicichla venezuela

This is an interesting fish. I'm tending to lean towards lent as well. Here's why. Notice the row of spots along the back. Vennies do not posses these. A lent in a stressful situation would exhibit the horizontal lines.

Here's a pic of a very young lent I had a few years ago. This fish was only 2" when I found them in a pet store. It looked very much like the OP's fish when I found them. Horizontal lines and all. Even though he is exhibiting a different pattern than the OP's fish, You can see the potential for a horizontal line were the fish to be stressed.

Sinister, the pic of lents that you linked to are exhibiting more of a "teenage" pattern rather than a juvenile pattern. Here the same fish I posted at 6", give or take.

There's also an outside chance they could be marmorata...

That said, I don't think they are vennies.

You make good points Scat, why I don't believe its a lent is because of the thickness of the lateral line as it gets midway down the body. When I got my lents at 4-5 inches, they didn't have any lateral lines. Of course it could be a different collection point, and either way...its a nice looking fish with some sweet patterns on its side.

If the OP could post some more recent photos of the fish while its not stressed, we'd get a better ID.

If it is a lent, and the OP needs a partner for his fish...I've got a couple I need to get out of my tank so the dominant male and female can bond properly

Seeing those last two pics, would make me inclined to a marmorata over a lent...and if that's the case, I'll fly down to FL just to buy that fish
