I just got a bigger tank for the kids, but I had to move their tank. So I did a large water change to make it easier to move it and I had to unplug the filter. I'd figured they can breathe directly from the surface so they should be fine. The tank was probably unplugged for 20-30 minutes. I moved the tank out of the way and started to slowly refill it, but since the water level was pretty low, I still couldn't plug the filter back in so there wasn't any water circulation. I usually add Prime at this point, but I figured I still have some time and I could add the Prime in a bit because since I was moving things around, the Prime was on the other side that I couldn't reach very easily. After the tank was filled half way, one of my Senegals started swimming erratically, then I noticed my BGK breathing heavily, then one of my Delhezi didn't look to good. All died right before my eyes and I tried, but couldn't save them.

So the lessons here is never assume your fish are tough enough, I should've used an air pump while I had the filters unplugged to keep the water circulaing, and put Prime in right away during water changes :(

20-30 minutes. I think it was the fact that I added the Prime later than normal.

Damn thats rough........ Sorry man I know you love those fish. How bad is your tap water ?

OOOH

I think this is the same thing that killed my two balas... didn't add prime in... then they lose the ability to swim and die a really really slow death... I euthanized my balas because the poly's were going to rip them apart as they floated around.

sorry man :(

They should be able to handle the filters being unplugged 20-30mins. I think what got you is low temp from the tap water and chlorine and chloramines. This stuff is a killer!!! When it's cold the water has a lot of bubbles and those gas bubbles can actually knock out a fish. Sorry to hear about the lost.

Man. I recently had to do the same thing. Did a huge waterchange, then moved the tank before I added water. Unplugged everything. The only thing different was I added prime while I was adding the water. Everybody was fine, except for 1 12 inch Pleco. Still dunno what happened to him. That's a tough loss. Sorry bro.
