Yep...it happened.

Last night during the t-storm, I lost power at home at around 3.30 AM. So I wake up every hour to stir up the water surface to get agitation on the surface.

4.30 - fine
5.30 fine
6.30 fine.

I woke up at 7 AM, and I saw about 10" of my black aro's tail hanging by my TSN's mouth.

The black aro was about 14", the TSN is about 18".

So I tapped the catfish head gently and he spit out the black aro, he was gone already.

Quick history, I got the black aro 5 months ago at around 10", put him in the 240, he got beaten up by the gar and the TSN. I moved him to a 75, do 3 WC per week and fed him twice a day. He was able to get a bit more aggresive and bigger.

Last month, I put him back in the 240, he was able to hold his own.

This morning he was gone.

So I may be donating the TSN to Dallas World Aquarium. I have had this guy since he was barely 3", eat from my hands, let me pet him and etc. But a catfish is going to do what a catfish does...

Theory: First of all does aro sees very well in the dark ? it was pitch black due to the power loss..My inital thought is that the aro was constantly moving with the current and flow and with even with the light off, I still have a moon light and he was still able to see what's going on around him.

So with no flow or current and pitch black environment, he just chill on one side of the tank. That being the case, it was easier for the TSN to grab him.

Life sucks...I should've never trusted the TSN to begin with.

So here I am looking for another black aro...

Eek!!! SORRY!!

ouch, sorry man :(

how did the catfish swallow an arow that big though?

He tried to swallow the aro. Swallowed the head compeltely and part of his body but wasn't able to finish due to his size.

The aro's rear section was perfectly intact.

Sorry for your loss.
From what I've noticed with my silver is that at night, it likes to sit at the bottom of the tank and "sleep", but once someone walks by or the light comes on, it rushes back to the top so your theory might be correct.

Man that sucks!

I'm sure after you grew your aro out, your TSN was thinking to himself, "MMMM, lunch got bigger!"

Sorry for the loss!

On a side note, I loved being able to power feed the aro.

Just the fact that you're able to mimic the natural environment with constant feeding, fresh water supply and being able to see the result so quick.

For the last 5 months, my schedule was simple. Feed the grow out tank twice a day, 50-75% WC 3 x times per week.

My Indo dats went from 3/4" to 3" within the same amount of time. My tigrinus went from 3"-4" to 7" within the same amount of time.

I am using an Eheim 2217, Fluval FX5 and 2 AC 100 with 3 sponge filters in a 75 gallon.

Which enhance my theory again, fish must thrived in our tank rather than surviving. If they are thriving, they will grow right before your eyes.

Time to get another one I guess..

Any take on having black, silver and lei ? Since the TSN will go, I can actually grow these guys out in the 240 and then the 600-700 by the end of this year.

The 240 have 55 gallon W/D and a 50 GPD Dosmatic drip system.
