There was another hit and this one stings. But this time, by my blood parrot Kong. For those of you who aren't familiar, Kong is short for "Queen Kong" because of her size and unrelenting aggression. She's 8+" inches and 8 years old. I discovered some time ago she couldn't be housed in a community setting. On a scale of 1-10 her aggression is a 9. She even attacked a teenage Brick, my oscar who was 8 inches at the time. Her brother Boss is my current avatar. You see her derpy upper lip and smile. But under that lip is a sharp fang tooth that she knows how to use. She had only one nemesis, my beloved pink parrot Patch. Patch had an entire mouth of teeth, aggression off the scale and shredded Kong.
Over a year ago when I struggled with so many hrps and their breeding I wanted to showcase a primary female with each parrot. I placed Mica, a granddaughter of Slade in with Tango. It worked until Mica got too aggressive and seemed not to care she was outsized like 8 to 1. Tango, my mildest parrot finally had enough of her yapping chiuacha bit and nearly killed her. I rescued her in time and she's been thriving in the all female tank since.
Her mother, Speck I placed in with Kong. You might ask why if Kong was so aggressive. Reason was simple. They made a match because Speck was equally aggressive. The two got along famously with a bit of sparring sometimes, nothing serious. I knew Speck wouldn't stress or hide (and she didn't). Sometimes she got a bit pushy and would even go in Kong's house. Speck had her own log on one side and Kong had her canister house on the other. Kong would arrange plants as a block. Sometimes they hung together.
So it worked until it didn't. This morning I found Speck's body stuffed between long roots from the floating water lettuce. As usual, the hit happend in the "dead" of night. Cichlids. When aggression is equal but one fish is bigger with more hardware somebody's gonna lose.
Never trust an assassin.

Her shanked tank mate, Speck. Speck was one of the oldest and most prolific daughters of Pip and Mongo.

Kong's only true nemesis, who terrified even her...the unforgettable and amazing Patch. But Kong was crazy about her all the same. When I lost Patch to ovarian cancer Kong refused to swim on the side where their tanks were close and moped for days.
