Hey guys, new to monsterfishkeepers, this website is really sick!
:headbang2

Anyway, I inherited a 100 gallon tank from my dad (he used it 14 years ago for a saltwater setup). He gave me everything he had, including the Magnum 350 cannister filter.

Since his 350 was missing a few parts, I went ahead and purchased a new Magnum 350 (believe it not not much has changed manufacturing wise lol).

I am running a simple freshwater setup right now, since I am way too noob to crack open a salt water this size - only inserting a few $1.99 tropical fish from Petsmart to break in the tank, etc.

My question is how long will it take for the tank to cycle running the carbon filter? The water is clean (I used the micron filter at first to filter all the small water particles), but it is still very cloudy looking, for example I can barely see from one side (horizontally) through the glass.

Do I need to add any water treatments? How about water changes? Every google site seems to have different opinions...hehe

The fish seem perfectly fine atm.

Take the carbon out you do not need it.
You need to treat the water to remove clorine and cloramines.
The filter you have will not adequitly filter that tank.

Welcome aboard.
Learn about the nitrogen cycle, this means EVERYTHING in the hobby. it is the bottom line in fish husbandry.

I thought the carbon removed the Chlorine?

I still have his old 350, I guess I could order the missing parts and run dual canisters.

Carbon does not remove chlorine. You need more filtration on this tank. Dechlorinate water. Test your tap water and see what it contains. It'll take awhile to cycle but it'll be worth it. You can get all your answers here on MFK. Welcome to MFK by the way.

stuff those magnums with bio media

Searching the site now. Thanks a ton guys.

What do you recommend exactly for this Magnum canister? I can goto the pet store tonight. Just want to make sure I get the correct media.

I use a mag 350 on my 55gal. paired w/ a fluval 405 . The 350 is a pretty good mechanical filter not much of a bio filter though. However every little bit helps.I use tank gravel in the carbon chamber insted. If you ever find the need to use carbon again rince the gravel in tank water & put back in tank. The gravel still has the bb on it for next time. Other wise you will be changing unnecessary carbon every two weeks.

I use bio max media in one of my 350's and scrubbies in the others. Do a general net search on aquarium cycleing. Your tank has to complete the nitrogen cycle before you can safely house fish. Any fish you have in the tank during this cycle may die and that is there reason for being there to get a food source going for the bio-bacteria. You also need to get a master test kit so you can know what is going on during the cycle.
