If I start the tank off using a filter from an established tank (2 years+ running) and water from the same established tank, how much of a "headstart" on the cycle will I get? Is it worth it to do it this way, or start with new equiptment? Any products out there to speed up the process? Bio spira isn't available anywhere near me and thats what I have used in the past....heard its been discontinued or the inventor is re-marketing it under a different name.

Thanks

edit// sorry...the tank will be a hospital tank or quarantine tank for feeders...hopefully a quarantine tank :)

if you have the filter for the new 10G and use media from the other filter...use 50% used tank water and 50% fresh ...thats what i would do! :D

i also would never bother with start up filter/tank products IMO waste of money.

in fact i've just done this today for my medication tank. there's a fish in it now

Thanks!

I did close to 75% established tank water and the filter is an AC30....same media in the filter, nothing added or removed. Have to wait for the fish store to open to try it out with a fish.

Well, I do not know about "loads," as there is not nearly as much oxygen as near the filter media, but yes, gravel def. helps.

oscars and some gars would look nice in there. :)

They would look smashing in a 10. Last tank I set up using an Emperor. Filled dechlored, set heater going. Took one of the wheels from an active 400 and switched with the new one in the 280. Added fish the next day without any problems.

Lol, I was kidding.:D Though one of my cousins had a 3" oscar in one of those little 1 gallon tanks. I freaked on him, though it looked kinda neat. Sorry for the derail.

It worked beautifully , no substrate added. Thanks for the replies all :)
