Hello, I recenlty purchased myself a new 120 gallon tank( 60x18x26) and I thought it would make good use as a grow out tank, i just stocked the tank yesterday with a 4 inch umbee, a 2.5 inch red tiger motoguensis (female) and 4 blood parrots, might add a few more fish in abit. just wondering if the tank seems good or if I might have some problems aggression wise? also I put many hiding spots and figure parrots might make good dither fish for the other two which I know could get aggressive lol

Hello,
I notice you say this is a grow out tank? What size do you have for the fish when they are larger? This will definitely not be a good permanent home for the fish, an umbee alone will be too big. You may know that already, not sure. In the meantime, it is hard to say if you will have problems. The umbee and Mota are definitely much more aggressive in general than the parrots. My prediction for this tank would be that as those two cichlids grow, they will batter the parrots pretty badly. Also, as those two look much more similar to each other than the parrots do, the larger of those two might single out the other and kill it. Tough to grow out an umbee with anything that isn't larger than it, from what I have heard.

thank you for the response, I plan on getting a 240 gallon in september, I know the umbee will get huge in abit lol from what I noticed so far no one is too aggressive for now, the parrots seem to be the feistiest so far actually lol

the umbee and the red tiger do have there differeneces already though you are right

At 4" and 2.5" the umbee and mota are babies still, I would expect their personality to shift quite a bit as they get larger. The 240 would probably house the umbee alone, you might have trouble getting it to share that size tank with other fish especially if it is a male. You could always leave the Mota and the parrots in the 120 and have the 240 for the umbee, maybe get it a mate as well.

that could be a good idea, I added a 5 inch male convict from my other tank to the 120 to possibly lower the aggression of the other two.

hello, so the convict idea worked out perfectly, whenever the umbee and red tiger kind of go at it the convict comes in and kind of separates them both lol hes just aggressive enough to be the leader of the tank for now

hello, so the growout tank is still going with a few changes, i had to remove the red tiger due to the fact the umbee was starting to get abit to mean for her. since I last posted I've added 3 small jags in the tank all around the 2.5- 3 inch mark( got them from a friend who had to get rid of his tank), so far so good , the umbees goes after them every once in awhile but nothing too intense, I find the baby jags getting very aggressive amongst themselves though
