I am just getting back into fish keeping after about a 3 year break. I got a 120 - 48"x24"x24". When I was keeping fish before I always had fully planted tanks and was really into the dwarf pike cichlids. Well I still want to fully plant this 120 with co2 and all the bells and whistles but, as far as fish go I would like to try something other than dwarf pikes. I really like the Vieja Argentea. But I also really like Texas Cichlids. No matter what fish I choose I really only want to keep a single breeding pair. So.... Is this tank big enough for a pair of either of these fish? Also are these good candidates for a planted tank?

A lot of large cichlids will uproot or eat your plants. My old Tex rearranged rocks and live plants. I haven't kept live plants with my cichlids in years. So I can't say what an Argentea would do. My Argentea moves rocks around but he doesn't bother my fake plants.

I think a 120 is definitely more than big enough for a pair of breeding Texas, and probably Argentea too. I had an Argentea once and it didn't mess with my plants much, but uprooting plants and digging in rock/sand is a notorious mannerism of big central and south american cichlids. Either way, you are going to end up with a big beautiful pair if that is what you want to dedicate that 120 to. Good luck!
