If you have a fine net or filter sock, you can skim the surface of your water.

You may want to bleach it, Then rinse it again.
I setup a 55gal a couple of weeks ago using TSC Black Diamond sand.
After about a week, Had algae like you wouldn't believe.(green water)
I'm running an ehiem 2217, And an emperor 400.

Spike:grinno:

What would bleaching the sand do?

I usually just use a net with very fine/small holes, and skim the surface picking anything up.
