hello, all.

I am not necessarily a complete newbie to the fish keeping game, but I've been out of the loop for a good while. I have been wanting to start keeping again, and my girlfriend just bought me a 125 gal acrylic tank. i just bought a fluval fx5, but filtration WILL BE UPGRADED when the fish i get are larger, and i have more cash. I've come here for help deciding what all to keep, and the quantities of each. I have a few ideas as to what id like to keep, but as i have never had a tank this large, i am not sure what all i can stock while keeping in mind the health of my animals. I am also unsure of what all is compatible with what, and i don't have oodles of time to spend researching. i have a few ideas of what i might like to keep.

i would like to have at least one oscar, i have kept these before.
jaguar cichlid
flower horn
texas cichlid
jack dempsey
red wolf fish

these are the ideas for the "Main attraction" of the tank. i plan on also having a place or 2, and a few fish comparable to silver dollars, but if i could, id like to find something a little more colorful to appease my girlfriend. everything is up in the air at this point, but i know i want mainly larger cichlids. input is greatly appreciated, including ideas on any different fish you all would recommend. links to good write ups and any good information would be greatly appreciated.

IMO unless you want to run many tanks any one of those combinations can become a disaster and then you would have to setup another tank for the perp. or victim. A pair of Oscars in a 125 is nice. Flowerhorn are best kept by themselves. Texas, Jacks or jaguar are pretty good single or a pair with some dither fish like dollars depending on the temperament.

Also to appease the women in our lives a planted tank with south american cichlids always does the trick a.ka. discus, angels, rams, apistos. etc.. and they don;t even mind when I spend money on the tank.....just saying.

You don't think I could keep a mix matched pair? I've had jacks and oscars together, but I didn't have them long enough to get them to their size potential

As has been stated in many threads, 125 is not big enough for a jaguar cichlid.

If you are set on an oscar, my advice is to pick other South American fish that go well with it. You're probably going to only have enough room for one, maybe two more large fish. The red wolf fish would probably be fine with the oscar. If you want a big cichlid with color, look at the chocolate cichlid.
