I just got a used 125 gal setup from a guy at work who is moving for a great price(free)
and am planning on using it for my oscar and jag since they have out-grown the 55 they are in. The tank came with two canister filters. One is a fluval 403 , and the other is an eheim about the same size. I have never used canisters before, but i got everything set up and they seem to be running well. They are not moving as much water as i would have expected. i have a few emperor 400's with bio wheels. would i be better off using them on the 125?

i say keep both canisters and hobs running full-time. one can never overkill with filtration right?

you could use all of them if you wanted.

Have the canisters been cleaned lately, and was he using the right filter material or did he experiment like we do ?

he told me he had recently changed out the media. i cleaned em out myself today and they were filthy!! the 403 and the 2217 both were loaded with old ammo carb and nasty pads. the pads rinced out nicely, and i put some bio-media in each one with some fresh ammo-carb. they are performing much nicer now. i am planning a diy overflow/sump system.im thinking around 600 gph should do it. it will be nice to be free of all that plumbing and the heaters clogging up the background.

perhaps it might have been better for cycling if you left one canister filthy and dechlored the tank before starting everything up. that way you keep some of the beneficial bact. to aid the cycling. its so tempting to clean though when everything is out and open.
