Okay. Just got a 135 with the sump, stand, canopy, and gravel for $250 (cheap) off craigslist. I've never really dealt with a sump before, so I have a few questions. It came with an undergravel, which I will likely ditch. I just want to make sure that I have the concept down. The water flows over the overflow (redundant), then drains down into the lower tank, passes through the bioballs and is returned to the main tank through the sump pump. That's the concept, right? I have valves on my pipes, that came like half way open... Should I assume that's the way they should be? Can you pump too many or too few gph with a sump? Then, after the bioballs, there is another tube pipe hooked up, that goes through this canister thing... I'm guessing that is for more filter media??? (pics to come). Anyway, like I said, this is all new to me, and it will take a lot of cleaning before I get this thing up and running, but if anyone (or everyone) would help me walk through this, it'd be appreciated.CAM01513.jpgCAM01514.jpgCAM01515.jpgCAM01516.jpgCAM01517.jpgCAM01518.jpgCAM01519.jpg

Its a little hard to see, but that canister looking thing in the fifth picture looks like it should have some filter media in it? The fourth picture is the hose that comes down from the overflow, it splits and empties over the bioballs. The next chamber has two pipes, one that goes straight to the pump, and another that goes through that canister looking thing with the red top and bottom before meeting up with the pump (it looks like). I don't know. Its kind of confusing. I may need to take more pictures.

looking at all the other posts in this "setup and filtration" forum, there are a lot more views than replies on every post. By a huge margin. Guess people only come to this forum with questions. Nobody here has any answers. Guess i'll figure it out on my own. If my overflow is dry, increase flow, if my tank is overflowing and my sump is dry, slow down the pump. Wait and see what happens with that canister filter looking thing; if water is running through add filter media... Thanks, MFK!!!

If anyone with sump filter experience happens to read this, could I get some feedback as to whether or not I'm on the right track?

Maybe you should wait more than 45 minutes for a response and stop acting like a child. It's midnight on the East coast which means people might be sleeping. Stop being immature over a tank that's not even being close to running. Get water in the tank, then ask questions.

50 views and 1 reply; actually, 0 replies. Yours can't count because you contributed nothing. Just sayin. The setup is close enough to running. It'll be up by next weekend. Anyway, thanks for your feedback. You were a great help.

Calm yourself down a little there hasn't been that much time to respond. I don't have an answer but viewed because I will be setting one up on my next tank and saw you had responses so I was hoping to learn something. I look forward to seeing your answers in the following days

Sorry, first time posting in the "setup and filtration" forum. In any other forum I ever posted in on MFK, if you get views, you get responses. This thread has received 50 views and no responses. like I said, I think most people come to "setup and filtration" looking to get answers, not give them. Seems to be true. Sorry if I offended you.

ChrisP75 kinda confirmed my conclusion... More people seem to come to this forum with questions than answers. Its not a bad thing, just an observation. And I have no idea why that observation was taken so personally. It certainly wasn't meant to be a personal attack at you or any other member of MFK.

A lot of people seem to toy with the idea of setting up a sump and then it seems so complicated that they don't. Took me a year. I would leave the ball valve at the half turn as that's probably the correct setting. There is a such thing as pumping too much and not pumping enough water. That's what that valve is for, to adjust the flow. As far as the canister, it appears to be a reactor of some sorts but that's not really an area I know much about. I hope this helps a bit.
