I am just waiting on delivery of my new 250,hopefully not to much longer:)
I have done the hole planted thing on a 110 before with co2 high light and decent substrate,But I want this one to be some what lower tech.
I really dont want to go down the co2 route again as this tank will have a sump and will probably end up gassing off far to much co2.
The cost of planted substrate is another downside to going more high tech.
The tank will be 90" long I have the starters available to put in up to 6 54watt T5's if required but I think that number will create more problems I was thinking of a max of 4.But I intend to suplliment with some LED's 3500K for the affect not there ability to grow plants.
I would welcome any ideas for a cheaper option to eco complete, flourite and so on.I intend to top off what ever i use with black sand probably in the 1-2 mm grain size so that it should not compact to much.
I will looking to be growing valis as it is a favorite of mine maybe some easier medium light plants as well as the easy java fern and moss and probably some anubis attached to a huge piece of bogwood.
This piece of bog wood is around 3ft in length and just under 30" tall

The tank will have a sump and an suto water change system built in through a HMA, I am not sure how that would affect dosing ferts,or even if they are required for lower light setups.
Any advise on the above would be fantastic.
Thanks in advance.

Wow! what a piece of wood!!! Will it fit in your new tank! Hope so!. I almost nothing about plants but it looks to me that the plants you mentioned are beginner types, so it might not matter how you set it up. However I'm sure you'll get some great advice here.

Be sure to post a pic of the monster piece of wood in your tank!

wow that is an amazing piece of wood.

I am also into the whole planted aquarium thing. I use the website aquariumplants.com, they have great plants for a cheap price, but they also have a really good substrate that is comparable to eco complete but much much cheaper. They also have free shipping on substrate. It has done really well for my aquariums a 125 and 55 heavily planted tanks. They are very friendly and knowledgeable, they really helped me out when I was getting started. :D

Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies.Unfortunatly Danie I am based in the UK so any suppliers in the states are not much use to me but thanks for the heads up,it seems everything is more expensive over here.
I am looking at maybe using a hydroponics baked clay substrate capped with sand in the 1-2 mm grain size, the hydroponics stuff is way cheaper than the aquarium stuff and very similar in make up to some of the specialist aquarium substrate's
The chunk of bogwood is awsome just had to have it,got a fantastic deal on it as well which all way helps it cost me £30 or just under $50, If it will not go in I will cut out the braces to get it in and then re silicon as it will be going in the tank come what may lol

Okay I know you want a planted tank BUT this piece of wood is so incredible in gnarls, shape, color and size. It would be a shame to cover any part of it. Your tank though.

I have been thinking the very same as the wood is so fantastic on its own may have to leave that unplanted, will maybe try it when setting up the tank and see how it looks
