Just got a 35 gallon tall tank and I want to do a cold-water aquarium.
The reason I want to do cold-water is so I don't have to get a heater, and I can keep some native north american fish. I can't decide what I should get. I'm thinking maybe a couple sunfish or maybe a large newt and some small minnows. If anyone has any ideas for a cool stocking suggestion please let me know. I wouldn't mind just having one or two big fish and I also wouldn't mind having a ton of small ones. The only thing I want to run to the tank is a big ass sponge filter. No heater, no HOB.

i love rainbow trout. i go fishing for them every year haha. you could just go fishing and use some of the fish you catch depending on where you are located

for a 35 gallon tank? I thought they get really big...

I live in Michigan by the way.

No I got it......Colorado Pikeminnow....... lol, just kidding native is right, instead of a heater you would need a chiller and powerheads for trout. Here are some fish you can truely get; If you want pretty there are Bluespotted and Blackbanded Sunfish, Flagfish or many types of colorfull Darters and shiners, if you want Cichlid like natives you might think about the Orangespotted or Bantam Sunfish, and if you want bottom dwellers their are madtoms and Sculpins that will fit in a 35g with out a heater. Jonahs Aquarium, Sachs Aquaculture and Zimmermans fish are all reputable Lfs's who sell coldwater natives on the web.
