i got a new 37g yesterday. 30"x12"x23" something like that. my plan is angels, cories and ghost shrimp. here are my questions:

1. how many angels will be cool without over stocking?

2. how many cories could i do with the angels?

3. would an UGF and a HOB be sufficient and safe for those species?

I wouldn't use the UGF if possible. Depending on the size of the angles you start with will determine how many. If you get some juvis, you could have 6 or eight and grow them out to see which ones you want to keep.

i would like to keep any angels i get in there for life. so lets say: 3 angels, 7-9 cories, and maybe 3-4 fancy guppies. would that be an OK and happy community?:D or would that be overstocked? thanks for the help. i also plan to try and put some plants in the mix.

If the angel's pair off for breeding you'll have to get rid of all but the pair, tank is simply too small for them to not become aggressive towards eachother.

I'd suggest looking into a canister filter rather then HOB or UG as they have controllable flow rates and can sustain huge bioloads - angelfish enjoy calm waters.

Personally I would go with a group of 5 angel fish and wait for them to pair off then move the others or return them...

well, i got the 37g. and filled it up. i am going to the LFS after work to get a filter and heater and some other stuff. my current plan is to move my one angel and five cories to the 37g. i dont think i want a pair of angels, cuz i dont need anymore fry. any other suggestionsas to angel tankmates. and are angels plant rippers? im going to try and plant the **** out of this tank.

angels are plant friendly.

get some tetra's and bottom dwellers as a cleanup crew for the angels...other then that I can't really think of good tank mates off the top of my head. Marbled hatchetfish if you can find em' and have a good lid.

37g planted...

Inhabitants, 1 angel, 2 green emerald corys, 1 L018, 5 black phantom tetras.

AC70 filter, stealth for the heat.

Coralife PC double strip light, 6700k bulbs.

wow digital that is a beutiful setup. cichlidbuddy you could put 2-3 angels and 6 black skirt or serpae tetras and say 7-9 cories. that would be ag ood setup. Although you might need a seperate tank if they breed.

I was gonna say go with a pair, but after seeing that beautiful shot of the solo gold Angel, nevermind. That makes a very beautiful center-piece, but I would suggest adding a few more tetras to that school.

remember the rule of thumb one inch of fish per gallon of water, (some people argue that that rule is incorrect, but i still use it to be sure i dont overstock) research how big angels get (about 6-8inches) and research how big all the other fish you want get, multiply the length of the fishes by how many of them you want, if the total length of all the fish added together equals less than 37 inches, you should be fine. also, in my opinion, the fish you have chosen (3 angels, 7-9 corries, and 3-4 guppies) sounds fine to me, but i would only recommend getting 2 angels because with three angels you are more likely to get a breeding pair, and one would be buy him/herself the pair will also be picking on the one lone angel, with 2 angels you could get 2 males, 2 females, or one pair, either way the angels shouldn't pick on eachother if you get two
