So I just picked up a 40 breeder today, and I'm trying to figure out what to put in it... As that will determine substrate, decoration, etc...

Originally I wanted an ornamental shrimp tank with a few large fish... Now I realize most large fish will eat the shrimp, so I've mostly tossed that idea aside...

So now my plan in maybe 4-6 fish, the largest I can keep in this tank for life, with maybe a couple cats or bottom dwellers...

What I've come up with was...
Green terrors
Convicts
Firemouths
JD & EBJD...

Now I've seen that GT and Convicts probably won't mix, and GT get too big for a 40 breeder... so scratch them I think...
Will convicts, JDs, and FM get along? I'm pretty sure FM and convicts will both fit size-wise, what about JD/EBJD? And will these three species get along? Looking at 1 or 2 of each, male, no interest in breeding, or the issues a mixed-sex tank can cause...

Along the same lines, will pictus or cory cats either one co-exist with these SA species?

Also wanting to be planted, since the height of the tank is so good for that... probably black sand over organic potting soil... if that is a factor... driftwoos or rockwork also, depending on which species and what they need...

Thanks! My head is swimming with info that I'm having trouble sorting through...

Male fm and cons could work, I wouldn't add JD or a ebjd. Ebjd are sensitive and cons will beat on them in a 40 breeder and regular JD get to big IMO. As for cories they don't mix well with cons or fm in my experience they get shredded and beat on by cons especially. As for plants cons with shred all but the most resilient plants firemouth usually leave plants alone, usually. Pictus could work as a bottom feeding catfish

OK, so if I went with pictus for the bottom, and a couple male Firemouths, so I can keep plants... What tankmates would work with the FM? Again, looking for 'centerpiece' fish, largest for this tank.

Note:
Already have an African cichlid tank, Peacocks, Haps, and Mbunas
Already have a community with smaller tetras, and a couple of ram cichlids...

Maybe something of a darker color to contrast with the light color and red of the FM? Blacks or Blues... (one of the reasons I was looking at Cons and JD...)

Kind of putting my plan together as I go...

To be honest I'd stick with just the firemouths. Cause most cichlids destroy plants and a 40 breeder really can't have to many ca/sa cichlids. Some others may have suggestions for some species

In the 40 gallon you're not gonna be able to have a big centerpiece fish. I personally think a couple female firemouths would do ok with cory cats. Maybe a female firemouth and a female convict with a school of cory cats.

Well, I've still got some time to decide, just got the tank today... I still like the idea of an ornamental shrimp tank, but basically any fish of decent size will eat them...

Maybe go with Ear theater cichlids instead?

At this point I think I'm just spitballing ideas, lol.

What I'd like to have, and what will work aren't always the same.

For eartheaters biotodoma cupido would work or rams, Probably some gymno species but I'm not that familiar with them.

some of the smaller acaras would work well,or keyholes.i think a pair of sajicas would be good in that tank, with some swordtails.

Well, not a fan of swordtails, and I think I'm going a different route now.
Badis badis
Peacock Gudgeons
Celestial Pearl Danio
Leopard Danios
Ornamental shrimp

Banjo cat or farlowella maybe.

That's the general idea for now... will finalize once I start getting more pieces of the setup together...

Thanks for the help!
